Calne Town FC
were established in 1886 and joined the
Western Football League Division One in 1986.
They earned promotion to the Premier Division
with a runner-up effort in 1992-93, but returned
to Division One after a last-place finish in
1998-99. Under the management of Kelvin Highmore
they returned to the Western Football League
Premier Division in 2005 and also became the
first
first division team to reach the Les Phillips

Calne Town FC is one of the
oldest clubs in Wiltshire, having been founded
in 1886. They played in the centre of the town
at the Recreation Ground and in 1920 amalgamated
with Harris FC to become Calne and Harris United
FC. The Harris in the name came from the bacon
factory that dominated the skyline in the middle
of Calne. The name remained the same until the
early 1960s when the original
name of Calne Town was readopted. At the same
time the club relocated to its current home at
Bremhill View where there was more scope to
improve facilities.

Throughout the first hundred years of its
existence Calne played in local Wiltshire
leagues and enjoyed limited success, but in
1985/86 a new committee was formed with the
objective of bringing a higher standard of
football to Bremhill View. The following season,
in the club's centenary year, Calne's
application to join the Western League was
accepted. After several years in Division One,
the club gained promotion in 1992/93 as
runners-up.
1997/98 saw Calne enjoy their best run in the FA
Cup, eventually losing out to Basingstoke Town
in a 3rd Qualifying Round replay. Unfortunately
relegation back to Division One followed in
1998/99, where Calne have remained.
In recent years there has been uncertainty about
the future of Bremhill View.
In the autumn of 1998 the Club was informed by
the Town Council that the land on which the
ground stood was to be sold for housing
development. Several possibilities as regards
re-location were discussed but finally, with the
collapse of the Town Council & proposed Lower
Beversbrook multi-sports complex, the Club
decided to search for a site of its own. Having
located one, the proposition sadly failed at the
planning application stage.
Calne were then
informed of the possibility of some land (about
70 acres) being available for purchase at nearby
Beversbrook and, after lengthy negotiations and
a survey of the land, ambitious plans were drawn
up, including provision of a 500 seat stand and
pitches for several youth and schoolboy teams.
The land was purchased by Calne Town Council and
a partnership application for funding between
Calne Town Council and the football club was due
to be submitted to the Football Foundation,
together with an outline planning application,
by the end of the summer in 2003. This did not
come about, and the situation changed
dramatically with the local elections of May
2004. A new council reviewed the
project and decided not to sell Bremhill View,
but to still press ahead with the Beversbrook
project. Outline plans have been drawn up which
offer much of the proposed facilities, and the
Club has been told that a planning application
is pending.
Thus for the time being at least Calne Town will
continue to play at Bremhill View. Since the
photographs on this page were taken in 2003 some
changes have taken place. The most obvious of
these is that the smart uPVC dugouts have now
been relocated to the opposite touchline. The
Calne Social Club stands here, but is no longer
used by the football club, with the nearby
‘North Star’ now fulfilling this
purpose. Since the re-siting of the dugouts,
supporters using the stand now have a much
better view of the pitch.
The Pavilion, which along with the main stand,
is located on the far touchline, has been
developed and now incorporates refreshment and
hospitality facilities; whilst there have also
been changes to the seating in the stand, with
it’s concrete cantilver-style roof, and the club
name picked out on its rear wall by the Club’s
current Treasurer / Programme Editor Jacky
Drake.
